An Invitation
“Why not experience the world as your true self?”
When people use make-up for the first time, many worry about being able to apply it properly.
This is natural since many first-time experiences never come out as expected. Perhaps the shades come out darker than expected; or maybe the final result looks nothing like the picture we saw.
But rest assured, applying make-up is not as difficult as it seems. Once it becomes routine, it becomes a much easier change to adapt to than transitioning one’s voice or gestures.
People of all genders and skill levels— many of them in the middle of their transition journey— are taking up cosmetics as a skill and are enjoying the benefits. They include beginners, women, trans- women, non-binary, or even simple cosplayers.
All of them are empowering themselves through cosmetics to explore their personal potential and express their true selves.
We invite you to join them.

Makeup Advice: There are many kinds of makeup style
Many people starting out with makeup have bad experiences because they mistakingly refer to only one style of doing makeup: makeup for young girls. This style of makeup is popular, but that does not mean it will suit everyone.
Girls in their late teens and early twenties usually use makeup to deepen their features with the aim of looking less childish and more mature. This is because they want to be seen as more sophisticated. On the other hand, popular styles for people in their 40s and older emphasize the exact opposite. They aim to use makeup to look younger by naturally softening points like sags and wrinkles.
The best style for you might be one of these, but it might also be something in between. Makeup knowledge will help navigate between the two spectrums. Naturally, every makeup beginner has the goal of obtaining a more feminine appearance, but a lack of makeup understanding might lead to the wrong approach.
“Makeup” is only one word but it can mean different things. This is because makeup is contextual: groups of people will use it in varied ways in different times. This explains why the makeup styles of the past look so different from the styles of today, and also why we wear makeup conservatively at work but extravagantly at parties. Knowing this, it is best to learn how makeup can be tailored towards each person’s unique needs and features, even from the first lesson.
So what technique should you use if you were born as a man? The trick is to think about how makeup can express the features you already have. The facial features a stylist can work with include eyebrows, cheekbones, jawlines, nose bridges, and bone depth; and just because someone is born as a man, it does not mean that these features can never be seen as feminine.
In recent years, the standards of masculine and feminine beauty have largely overlapped. Now more than ever, makeup has the power to bringout the beauty one sees in themselves, regardless of their born gender.

Makeup Advice: Shop for Makeup Like an Expert!
One feature of our make-up lessons is that we have prepared everything you need to get started in the studio. All you need to bring is yourself! *Equipment availability may have changed due to COVID.In addition to essential cosmetics, we have prepared for you mirrors (of which there are three types), as well as sanitary items like cotton pads, cotton swabs, make-up sponges, and make-up remover (they are individually wrapped, when appropriate). The three types of mirrors include actress mirrors, magnifying mirrors, and full-length dance mirrors.[From the textbook during the Otomejuku Nagoya expedition]In the first 3 or 4 makeup lessons, we aim to teach how to apply “basic full makeup”, regardless of the student’s age or gender.

3. | How do I make a proper eyeshadow gradation? |
The basis of good eye shadow application is creating a gradation that starts light up the lid and grows darker near the eye. This technique creates the most natural impression. When applying eyeshadow, apply it from side to side, like a windshield wiper, while gently following the curve of the eye. |
|
4. | How do I apply eyeliner properly? |
When starting out, do not apply liner too close to the eye. Start out near midway the lashes, and apply it thicker near going out. How thick the liner is depends on the look you are aiming for, and so there is nothing wrong with doing multiple strokes. |
[From the textbook during the Otomejuku Nagoya expedition]
Also, when talking about makeup as a skill, it is common for people to focus only on the artistic side. However, there is a scientific component to makeup that one needs to learn in order to master the basics. For this reason, lessons will also teach the chemical aspects to makeup and how they influence both the application process and the final result.Equipped with the technical knowledge you will learn from our initial lessons, you can gain confidence in buying makeup by yourself.
Lastly, all the cosmetics used at Otomejuku are specially curated by our instructors and are replaced every month. If you like using a specific product in our class, then you can find and buy it in one of the nearby cosmetics shops. By giving you a hands-on experience with a selection of makeup products, we aim to give you the confidence to make cosmetics shopping a genuinely enjoyable experience!
Makeup Advice: Be Seen as a Girl from the First Glance
Once you learn the basics of applying full make-up, the next step is to apply makeup to realize your model’s self-concept.
Developing this skill is essential because the first worries people develop involve fears of being seen in public. Worries include:
“What if others still think of me as a man?” “What if others judge me on the train?”It is important for students to learn how to address this right away by learning how to understand their model’s vision, and guiding them throughout their outer transformation. The ultimate goal is to have your model be “recognized as a woman” from the first glance onwards.
Difference between a Trans-Salon and a Typical Salon
Most traditional beauty salons tend to focus on making their models “photo ready”. Rather than promoting makeup as a daily tool to express one’s gender identity, these salons focus on producing one-time, picture-perfect moments that are further processed by image editors. Because this practice is less intentional, we have personally heard people complain that, after going to such salons, they “ feel nothing about [them] has changed, even with the makeup on.”
We believe that makeup has the extraordinary power to do more than cutesy photos, and this belief is what differentiates transvestite salons as well. Transvestite salons adapt their techniques to the vision and existing features of each model. Makeup lessons start by listening to each individual’s voice. Models are asked to express their vision through their own keywords: words such as “passing” or “cute” or “beautiful”. The stylist then works towards the model’s personal vision. If the model is unsure what their preferences are, the stylist works with them to find it.
Makeup lessons at Otomejuku prepare students for the challenges that this style of service presents. For example, students are taught ways to make a model’s eyes hang lower or look closer together; to make their face look shorter; or to hide droopiness around the eyes. Our studio has adopted this philosophy because we do not aim to produce a picture to frame once, but rather a visual identity that our models can feel proud of for the rest of their lives.
Makeup Lesson Flow
During your lessons at Otomejuku, half of your model’s face will be done by the instructor, and the other will be done by you only.
If students are done early, they can receive hair service from their instructors. This way, students can also enjoy the salon process themselves.
If you are interested in signing up for our program, you might worry that our lessons mostly teach traditional makeup styles using the stiff approaches of the past.
This should not be a worry, though. Makeup Instructor NAO constantly keeps up to date with the latest makeup styles and trends, and takes a fun, modern approach to teaching them.

Foundation | |
Foundation is one of the most recognizable types of makeup as many of us have seen our mothers wearing it.
First off, one should be careful not to apply too much foundation. Technically speaking, the original meaning of foundation means “to “establish” or “to create”.
Its main purpose is not to hide blemishes, but to act as a basic (foundational) layer for other cosmetics expand on. |

About Your instructor
NAO, our head makeup instructor, began her passion by experimenting with different types of makeup at home. She developed her own theory of makeup, by analyzing the facial structure of men, and using medical knowledge to emphasize the naturally feminine features men have. She later attended and graduated from a makeup school, as well as a vocational school for cosmetics. From all that she learned and the experiences she had in school, she realized that her initial ideas were sound.
She has worked at a store in Shinjuku 2-chome. After leaving there, she ran a make-up exhibit at the LGBTQ+ event, “Crossdresser / Transsexual Her Propaganda”. Wanting to expand her contributions within the community, she will collaborate with Satsuki Nishihara for the first time in order to provide a comprehensive experience to trans people looking to transition. She has been an essential part of Otomejuku’s success since its opening in 2016. Nevertheless, she continues to work and volunteer in other salons and events which promote trans acceptance nationwide.
Reflections: Finding Yourself through the Complexity
I often hear famous makeup artists saying:
“Be confident in yourself.””Everyone has good points, so try to find your own charm.” And, “Let’s use make-up to bring out the complex”.I think these are wonderful views of makeup, but they never resonated with me even when I was young and I always wondered why.At that time, I realized, “If I were a trans-person, I wouldn’t know what part of the complexity I would want to bring out.” Maybe I wouldn’t even want to emphasize the complex, masculine parts of me at all (like my beard or angular face). Instead, I would want to simplify myself into a new identity that did not centre around the masculine.
These thoughts and experiences regarding makeup lead me to create advice based on “Feature Transformation”. This advice focuses more on the reflective process of discovering your ideal self. Is your ideal self cool? Or maybe it is cute, beautiful, or even sexy? Any of these can be expressed by even one simple feature of the face. I want to help people discover it and confidently say:”I never knew this aspect of me was actually so adorable! I fall in love with myself every time I see it.”
This is the unmatched power that makeup has in inspiring confidence and self-love.
